Welcome to
The Hidden Chapel

Like all really good things in life, there’s a challenge you must take before you can reach The Hidden Chapel. In this case, it’s a short walk down a narrow path between two cottages. You may wonder where you’re headed until you round the corner and see the perfectly proportioned stone chapel, magically overlooking the hills and dales of the Devon countryside.

The Hidden Chapel is a beautifully converted Congregational Chapel built in 1856 in the ancient village of Zeal Monachorum, mentioned in the Doomsday Book, boasting glorious views and endless great walks in the heart of Devon. Our characterful holiday home is set on the edge of the stunning Dartmoor National Park.

Bought in its original state without planning permission in 2016 and lovingly converted, the conversion process was recently documented by Channel 4 for a series with Charlie Luxton scheduled to air sometime in 2021.

I have always had a romantic notion that one day I would live in a chapel or a church. I think it’s something about the high ceilings, wonderfully shaped windows and a sense of purpose that the building once offered. I was never serious enough about this fanciful notion until late summer 2020 on a rainy day when I was sitting at home in Canada and, for no really good reason, I started looking online at houses in Devon. As a transplanted Brit from the Midlands, now living in Canada, the draw to come ‘home’ was always there.

Being familiar with Devon and adoring its countryside, my rainy day afternoon virtual internet walk took me to a renovated chapel for sale, literally hidden in a rural Devon village. So I bought it, sight unseen, and this is now my winter home. It has been a fabulously satisfying project, enhancing the renovations and curating a number of special pieces to make the chapel my own. I hope you love it as much as I do and create more memories for this little chapel to keep.
